France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a plan to invest €10 billion in an offshore wind project, to build 600 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 3,000 MW and about 10,000 jobs to be created from this.
Wind energy represents just 2% of the country’s output capacity, while 80% of its electricity is now generated from nuclear power. In order to achieve the target set for 2020 to produce green energy to cover 23% of demand, France plans to invest a total of €20 billion to build a wind power capacity of 25,000 MW.
